Find the Wonder

Stories allow to experience the wonder of life.  Experience a story.  Share a story.

Fiction

Parrot Love is a collection of short stories that explores the many fictions of grief.  My characters inhabit domestic landscapes, in which lies live on in moments of magic and shimmer. InTwenty-Five-Random Things About Me,” which was a top-25 finalist for a Glimmer Train Fiction Open, a girl responsible for the death of her friend meets a boy who’s collecting ghosts. In “All the Love in the World,” which was shortlisted for the Bellevue Literary Prize judged by Jane Smiley, a woman ponders the fate of stray kittens and her ailing father.

Nonfiction

My nonfiction journey began as a newspaper journalist, but I found that I most loved the depth and artistry available in magazine articles and essays.  I have been published in The New York TimesArizona Highways, America West Airlines Magazine, PHOENIX Magazine, Black Enterprise, Valley Guide  Quarterly, Scottsdale Magazine, Arizona Business Magazine, Iowa Woman, The Des Moines Register, The Associated Press, Working Woman, Pithead Chapel and moreI am a contributing editor for Short Story Magazine.

Coaching

I confess that I live vicariously through my client accomplishments; lucky for me, they are so prolific.  My clients have placed books with Candlewick Press, Greenleaf Publishing, Yotzeret Publishing, Melange Publishing, Bottom Dog Press and more.  They have written for GlamourNational Geographic, The New York Times, Salon, and elsewhere. They have won a Glyph, two Zebulons, a CIPA EVVY, four Colorado Gold finalist’s designations, a Tin House Literary Award and a finalist designation for The Flannery O’ Connor Award for Short Fiction.

Teaching

I am a firm believer in a custom education. I have two master’s degrees and homeschool my son because we can do more, faster and have more fun.  My clients say that I am homeschooling at the adult level. I’ve also taught in more traditional settings, including the Piper Center for Creative Writing at Arizona State University, for the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University and for Phoenix College’s Creative Writing Department.  I teach a free monthly member workshop for the Boulder Writers’ Workshop, which I founded in 2008.

Testimonials

tom-stoner

Lori DeBoer, my writing coach, helped me polish and fine-tune my manuscript. She coaxed and cajoled personal stories out of my head and onto the page and reminded me that my voice needed to enliven the rich and sometimes dense subject matter in this book.

Small Change, Big Gains: Reflections of an Energy Entrepreneur

Jessica Fishman

“I came to Lori to strengthen my manuscript’s story line and narrative arc, tighten its conflict, and improve character development. As a professional development editor, Lori was incredibly supportive of my work, but most importantly gave me specific and constructive criticism to improve my book. Her hands on approach gave me both the knowledge and the skills to be able to improve my writing. Not only does Lori know writing, she also knows the writing business. It was a pleasure working with Lori and I highly recommend her. She is both professional and a great person. Every dollar I spent was worth it.”

Brenda Barry

“Best coach ever. Lori and I worked together through two of my books. She’s amazing and they don’t come any better. I would not be where I am today with my book if it wasn’t for Lori D. She taught me so much and I will be using her services again. I have now had two offers from two different publishers and have picked one. And have a third interested, which is so amazing.”
